Make your data and publication FAIR and Open Access

ASSEMBLE Plus participates in the Open Research Data Pilot (ORD), an initiative of the European Commission aiming to make
FAIR and Open Access the data generated by Horizon 2020 projects.

  • FAIR refers to the way data and metadata are provided and structured: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-useable
  • Open Access means that data and publications are free to be downloaded and used

Data and publications produced within the Transnational Access programme of ASSEMBLE Plus are required to be FAIR and Open Access (for specific opt-outs to the ORD Pilot, see the box below). More information on how results generated in the whole ASSEMBLE Plus project are made FAIR and Open Access are available at this link.

As a user of the Transnational Access you are required to:

  1. Submit a Data Management Plan
  2. Store your data
  3. Make your publication Open Access (this is a requirement for TNA project)

1. Submit a Data Management Plan

The Data Management Plan (DMP) explains what sort of data is being collected/created in your project and how it will be made FAIR. If you have completed and sent already the “Activity Report + DMP” (available in our Download Area and due after 30 days of your on-site/remote access) you can go ahead and store your data!

2. Store your data

Data generated during your research in the Transnational Access should be archived in a database where their long-term survival is guaranteed. These data also need to be linked to a record in a metadata catalogue, so that others can find, download and (eventually) re-use them. In ASSEMBLE Plus we store your data in the Marine Data Archive (MDA) and the metadata record is created in the Integrated Marine Information System (IMIS); but both steps are done at the same time via IMIS's "data publish" form.

In case you want to use any other online data archive to store your data (e.g. you have published your data in another place that is used by your community), let us know.

Storing your data is done as you create your dataset record in IMIS, using an online submission form. Youa are required to make your data free to use within two years from their collection or after publication in a scientific journal. Check our advice on how to format your data and then store your data in IMIS!

When you fill in the form

  • please make the comment that this is an ASSEMBLE Plus Transnational Access dataset
  • state whether the data are to be made open access immediately or only after the 2 year moratorium period

This will allow for a faster processing of your submission.

STORE YOUR DATA in IMIS

Once submitted, and after being accepted, you will receive an email with the “dataset id" (dasid) of your data.
In case of questions regarding your data record in IMIS, please write to .

3. Make your publication Open Access

Publications resulting from the Transnational Access programme must be Open Access.

To make your publication Open Access, you can:

  • publish in an Open Access Journal ("Gold" publishing)
  • publish in a journal that allows a PDF of the accepted article to be archived in an Open Repository ("Green" publishing). ASSEMBLE Plus offer its own ASSEMBLE Plus Open Repository for cataloguing your publication.

For more information on our Open Repository and on Open Access publishing, see the description of our Open Repository

As soon as you publish an article from a research funded by ASSEMBLE Plus, send an email to including:

  • the title of your publication
  • the DOI of your publication
  • the PDF of the publication
  • specify that your research has been funded through ASSEMBLE Plus Transnational Access programme
  • the dasid of the metadata record you created for the dataset that this publication is linked to

If you have forgotten about the Open Access requirement and you have published in a non-OA journal, then you have the following options

  • your institute pays to have your article made open access
  • ask of the journal the following: "What is your policy on archiving the final version is (for storage in an open repository), and what is your policy self-archiving or green open access is (storing preprint open access). Can we add our article on the ASSEMBLE Plus Open Repository? If it cannot be added to the ASSEMBLE Plus Open Repository immediately, when will the embargo period elapse?

Please inform us of the outcome of your query ( ). Please bear in mind that not only ASSEMBLE Plus, but also the EU funders, require this open access for publications.

After this step, all the data stored in IMIS linked to your publication will be automatically made Open Access.  Your data will be made Open Access anyway after two years from their submission to IMIS.
